Review

“Reviewed By Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers’ Favorite

Buddy is a puppy husky dog. It’s night time, but he’s finding it difficult to fall asleep. He’s lying near the window, watching the night sky dreamily, trying to count in the hopes he might drift off. But Buddy is a dreamer, even with his eyes open. He sees shapes in the star patterns and he imagines what it’s like up in the night sky. His mother, lying by the hearth to keep warm, assures him that the night sky will be there every night all year long, while other things outside will change with the seasons. Just like family and the love and compassion you share with each other will be there every day, even when the seasons might change other things.

Marie D.’s picture book story, A Dog Called Buddy: The World through the Eyes of Buddy (Short Stories for the Little Ones with Moral), is a simple way to introduce young readers to the importance of family and caring for one another. With a little bit of imagination and a whole lot of dreaming, this simple story, complete with beautiful illustrations, is a compassionate tale of love and belonging. While Buddy is dreamily looking into the distance, imagining the beauty beyond the distant stars, his mother assures him that there is beauty right before him, in the changing seasons right outside his door. Whilst his dreams might take him to the distant stars, his mother reminds him gently of what’s important right here on earth: for one thing Jenny is important and Jenny’s family who takes care of Buddy and his mother. Family is important; it’s not a distant dream, nor is it a magical illusion. A powerful message told simply for young readers to understand.”
